The ideal Hospital Information System (HIS)
In my perspective, an ideal Hospital Information System (HIS) should be design in order to integrate both financial and administrative applications as well as clinical aspects. It should combine a Financial Information System (FIS) and a Management Information Systems (MIS). The system should be designed so that it is linked to a Clinical Information System (CIS) as well. CISs are concentrated on patients’ clinical state related data, and thus it is important that the main HIS be linked to this system as well in order for the hospital to run in a cost effective and time efficient manner. Through this key integration of the Hospital’s digital/multimedia data, any authorized personnel of the hospital can retrieve any necessary information at anytime from anywhere inside the hospital. From medication prescriptions, to radiographic images, to physician’s notes; the personnel can retrieve each and every piece of information about a patient through the HIS. However, with the use of such an advanced HIS, comes the requirement of the necessary hardware and software. The computers must have top specifications and have the required multimedia handling/viewing software installed. The HIS must be configured in order to be compatible with the hospital’s IDMR – Integrated Digital Medical Records, PACS - Picture Archiving Communication System, and Doc Is – Document information systems. Hence, meaning that each and every computer connected to the HIS must be configured in order to handle huge amounts of multimedia data, and must of course be connected to the central or main server(s) by LAN. All in all, the ideal Hospital Information System (HIS) should fulfill its chief purpose without any failure and compromise, which is: “to achieve the best possible support of patient care and administration by electronic data processing” (wikipedia source).
